The D&RG aquired a large number of 4-4-0s new from Baldwin during 1877 to 1881, including several different classes.
Among the larger were the class 42 4-4-0s built in 1880 which served the line through to the mid 1890s. The 4-4-0s
would ultimately be replaced by larger 4-6-0 locos, but in the late 1880s, both the 4-6-0s (T-12) and many of the
class 42 4-4-0s were rebuilt and modernised in the railroad's own shops and featured many of the latest steam
innovations and style. Someboxes were extended with coal cinder filters fitted within, and the old diamond stacks
were replaced by shot gun stacks. The old fluted domes were replaced with the latest styling, and the colourful
1880 green and gold paint schemes overpainted in plain black.
This model is a simple modernisation of the Bachmann 4-4-0, a locomotive very close to the D&RG Class 42. The
smokebox has been extended, a new box headlight fitted on a platform, shot gun stack and rounded domes added.
On the tender, new large tool boxes have been added, and a new air tank fitted to the rear deck. The whole
loco is repainted in semi-gloss black, flat black and Russia Iron, including the boiler bands. Oxide brown
has been applied to the tender top and roof. The loco has been detailed and painted to represent D&RG #87 'Rito Alto'
as she looked in the early 1890s. Photos also exist of #95 'Embuda' and #100 'Hesperis' in a very similar
modernised style.
