A pond filter-That looks like a wishing well

The kids love to play with the small hand pump, that is kept primed by diverting water from the filter, and the small pail that hangs on a rope with a hand crank.
The lava rock is about 3"-4" below the water.

The pre-filter is housed in a plastic storage box that I cut and shaped to fit inside the roof
My Filter Setup
The wishing well sits next to the path leading to our front door and is the "head water" for "Bear Creek" one of two creeks that flow into "Bear Lake" (our gold fish pond) the other creek "Little Bear Creek's head water" is a small (9 foot high) windmill that "pumps" it's water into a animal watering trough.
I based my pond filter on the 55 gallon barrel filter By Greg Bickal, for my 220 gallon pond, I used quilt batting as a pre-filter, and a half whiskey barrel filled with lava rock as a filter. To clean the filter, I turn off the pump, blow air through a pipe that runs to the bottom. This air backwashes the filter and shakes loose the detrus. I then drain about 10 gallons of dirty water from the filter. Then turn the filter back on.
The Whiskey Barrel filter is an inexpensive and decorative way to provide filtration for small sized pond. This has a flow rate of around 600 gph, it holds around 1 1/2 cubic feet of media.

This is "Bear Lake" (really a goldfish pond)
